- Are your ideas of obesity and fat control based on a myth? -
For years we heard that a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet would keep us healthy and help us lose weight. And many of us jumped on the bandwagon. Our idea of obesity and fat control was to eliminate fat and high-cholesterol foods from our diets.
Unfortunately, we were doing it all wrong.
– The Truth about Obesity and Fat Control –
Instead of eliminating fat completely, we should have been eliminating the "bad fats," the fats associated with obesity and heart disease and eating the "good fats," the fats that actually help improve blood cholesterol levels.
– Bad Fats –
There are two bad fats that you should limit your intake of - saturated and trans fats.
Saturated Fats
Saturated fats are mostly animal fats. You find them in meat, whole-milk products, poultry skin, and egg yolks. Coconut oil also has a high amount of saturated fat. Saturated fats raise the levels of both the good and bad blood cholesterol.
Trans Fats
Trans fats are produced through hydrogenation-heating oils in the presence of oxygen. Many products contain trans fats because the fats help them maintain a longer shelf life.

I’ve been feeling a tired and slow lately. Just don’t have my usual get-up and go. Naturally, I blame the gastric bypass ? it gets the blame whenever I don’t feel well. After careful assessment I realized I have forgotten to take my vitamin for almost three weeks now. I am probably iron deficient ? a risk all gastric bypass patients face.
We’ve all heard of anemia ? a dangerous iron deficiency disease. In fact, iron-deficiency anemia is second only to obesity as a nation-wide health problem in the United States. Nine out of ten women in this country do not get their RDI of 18 milligrams of iron a day. That means their heart, brain and all other tissues are not receiving enough oxygen ? iron is the chemical element in the red blood cell hemoglobin that delivers oxygen throughout the body.
If a person is short on iron they suffer a loss of energy, low-level fatigue ? the blahs!
Brain activity, breathing, cellular respiration and every activity of the body depend on iron in the blood. Rosy cheeks and a glowing complexion indicate iron needs are met. Energy levels are up and an overall sense of wellness pervades.
No commentsBeverages - and not just alcohol - are a significant if little recognized source of calories in North American diets. Yet many people seem to believe that if a calorie is ingested in fluid form, it’s a freebie.
“They just don’t put it in the same category - they’re not eating, they’re quenching a thirst,” says Richard Mattes, a nutrition professor at Purdue University in Indiana who has done extensive research on beverage consumption.
Sure, most people know a thick milk shake, a sugary cola or a pint of beer isn’t the best choice for someone on a diet. But how bad could iced tea be? And a bottle of juice is good for you, right? A refreshing Frappuccino? Heck, that’s basically a coffee slush, isn’t it?
Not exactly.
Between the ingredients and the sizes in which they are sold, many drinks contain a surprising number of calories, enough to derail any weight loss or maintenance regime.
“I really believe that beverage consumption is contributing to the weight issue in a very substantive way,” says Mattes, who notes there’s been a huge jump in sales in virtually all beverages - with the exception of milk - in recent years.
No commentsDisturbed vibrations occur in the body as a precursor of illness. Vibrational healing restores the body’s healthy vibrations. Essential oils can be used to balance the subtle energy flows in the body.
We are surrounded by vibrations at all times. Our ears are tuned to receive sound vibrations, our eyes focus on vibrations of light which allow us to see colour, and our noses detect vibrations of aromatic molecules which allow us to become aware of scents. The most important ingredient in the Aromatherapy treatment is the essential oil.
Aromatherapists and perfumeries use musical language to describe scents. We talk of essential oils being a top, middle, and base note. About a century ago, a perfumery named Piesse arranged scents on a stave, or musical scale, and this went some way to describing the vibration of scents.
Aromas were also described by colour. Scents can be described as ‘green’ or ‘blue’ or perhaps ‘vivid red’, and we mix scents as we would, colour on an artist’s palette.
Historically, the sense of smell has always been important to man and to his survival. A newborn baby recognises his mother mainly by scent until his eyesight improves and he learns to focus.
No commentsEating when under stress isn’t just about filling an emotional need. Your body has a system of hormonal checks and balances that actually promote weight gain when you’re stressed out.
The so-called “stress hormone” cortisol is released in the body during times of stress along with the hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine that constitute the “fight or flight” response to a perceived threat.
Following the stressful or threatening event, epinephrine and norepinephrine levels return to normal while cortisol levels can remain elevated over a longer time period. In fact, cortisol levels can remain persistently elevated in the body when a person is subjected to chronic stress.
How does cortisol influence weight gain?
Cortisol has many actions in the body, and one ultimate goal of cortisol secretion is the provision of energy for the body. Cortisol stimulates fat and carbohydrate metabolism for fast energy, and stimulates insulin release and maintenance of blood sugar levels. The end result of these actions is an increase in appetite. Thus chronic stress, or poorly-managed stress, may lead to cortisol levels that stimulate your appetite, with the end result being weight gain or difficulty losing unwanted pounds.

Setting goals that are realistic can be a huge motivating factor in sticking to your home gym workout routine. These goals keep your mind focused on the rewards you will see and feel.
Once you start your exercise workout program and experience good results, you will become even more dedicated to achieving your goals. When beginning an exercise program here are a few important things to consider:
No comments1. Carrying around excess body fat will decrease your energy level. Having just 10 lbs. of excess body fat is like carrying around a 10-lb. bag of lard.
2. Your heart has to work overtime to support the extra weight. Obesity has a harmful effect on your entire cardiovascular system. Your cardiovascular system includes your heart, your lungs, and all of your arteries and veins.
3. You may develop breathing problems. For example, sleep apnea is a breathing problem that causes you to stop breathing for short instances during sleep. Sleep apnea can also cause snoring.
4. Extra weight will take a toll on your joints. Obesity has also been linked to gout, which is when uric acid that cannot be excreted collects in the joints of the toes.
5. Obesity can cause infertility.
6. Type 2 Diabetes has been linked to obesity.
7. Extra weight will put you at a higher risk for certain types of cancer. Obese men have a higher risk of developing colon, rectum, or prostate cancer. Obese women have a higher risk of developing gallbladder, breast, uterine, cervical, or ovarian cancer.
No commentsOver two hundred years after this momentous event the world is still saying WOW in amazement to this gracious art. Hypnotherapy has come so far and I believe that we are now in an age where we now know so much of how the mind works and what makes us tick, that it is possible to successfully change our lives into the dreams that we wish them to be! During my time as a
Hypnotherapist I have enjoyed tremendous results from my clients, I put this down to my main work ethic, which is ? When I work with someone my only aim is to help them achieve the kind of life that they desire through empowerment!
Hypnosis can be briefly described as an altered state of consciousness, just like daydreaming.
While in Hypnosis, changes can be made in the part of the mind that you don’t consciously use, this is called the sub or unconscious mind. Also while in Hypnosis you will feel relaxed and comfortable and will be able to hear the Hypnotists voice guide you to make the changes that you want to achieve. Hypnosis is a perfectly natural state, as mentioned it’s a bit like being in a daydream. You will know exactly what is going on around you, but also be so completely relaxed.
No commentsHealth food or heart attack on a plate? Eggs had a bad rep for a few years. We worried that they would elevate our cholesterol levels. But, that was then. Now, it turns out that eggs eaten in moderation might just do more good than harm. Long term research indicates that the dietary cholesterol found in eggs doesn’t necessarily raise blood cholesterol levels.
What’s the skinny? Well, one large Grade-A egg weighs in at about 70 calories and contains 6 grams of protein and only 5 grams of fat. Just 1.5 grams of this fat is saturated. The average woman should eat about 65 grams of fat per day. And, eggs are chock full of valuable vitamins; they’re a good source of riboflavin, folate, vitamin B12 and pantothenic acid.
Omega what? You’ve seen them in the grocery store. Omega-3 eggs are being marketed across the country and for good reason. The nutrition community is excited about these fats, found in flax seeds, nuts, soy products and canola oil because they seem to help lower blood triglyceride levels. To make these eggs, producers feed the chickens a diet high in omega-3 foods.
No commentsLousy Reasons to Lose Weight
“I want to be a size 0.”
“You can never be too thin.”
“I want to fit into the same clothes I wore in high school.”
“I want to be a waif.”
“People will see me as more glamorous.”
“People will see me as more childlike.”
“Thin people are more popular.”
“I want to look like a model.”
“Every one else is underweight.”
“I want higher cheek bones.”
“People will be nicer to me if I am smaller.”
“Other people tell me I look fat even though I am within the ideal body weight limits.”
“If I lose all of the weight for good, maybe I can stop throwing up after I eat once and for all.”
If any of the comments above resemble your own rationale for losing weight then you don’t have a weight problem. But you may well have a psychological problem. You simply might not be mentally or emotionally prepared to handle any weight loss problem. Consult with a qualified therapist to get to the bottom of this issue in case its a cognitive disorder. A cognitive disorder is when someone suffers from a distorted view of herself, the world or how others see her.
