Chances are if you’ve stepped foot in a gym or watched a television fitness program in the past year then you’ve seen the "big balls". You’ve probably wondered what all the fuss is about. Well, they may look like something found on a children’s playground, but don’t be deceived. These balls offer one of the best methods for strengthening your abdominals and core.
That is why the fitness industry is jumping on the ball bandwagon. According to the 2003 Idea Fitness Programs and Equipment Survey, 89 percent of IDEA businesses were offering balls to their customers and 71 percent had added ball group fitness classes in 2003.
Find it hard to believe that simply sitting, rolling or bouncing on a big inflatable ball can make you more fit? Read on to learn just how effective ball fitness can be.
While they are somewhat of a new craze in the public domain, the ball (commonly known as stability ball, fitness ball, Swiss ball, physio ball, etc) was used as early as the 1960s. It originally was used by physical therapist to assist with rehabilitation.
No commentsThe topic of nutrition is one that is always present in our lives no matter where we turn. It’s on the news, magazine articles, at school, at your doctor’s office, and even is a major topic for many books.
Over the years, there have been many ideas presented how to structure your diet so you ensure a good state of health. The RDA established by the government recommends certain percentages of nutrients that are claimed to be a healthy standard for all people in this country.
Now you have many scientists and researchers stating that the RDA standards are too low and need to be revised to reflect higher percentages of nutrients. There are other scientists and doctors that claim based on your body type, you should only eat certain types of foods while avoiding others.
Many health officials advise the public to limit total fat intake to a low percentage of their total daily calories. There are other groups that claim eating a good portion of fat in the diet is actually healthy. So, who is right and what constitutes eating healthy?
No commentsAmerica loves fast food. Last year, consumers spent billions of dollars on the hamburger industry alone. Corporate giants such as McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Burger King all boast of multi-million dollar incomes each year.
Why?
Because their foods are delicious! Americans everywhere love the rich flavors of gigantic Big Macs and king-sized Whoppers. Our mouths water and noses flare at the enticing smell of a Bacon Double Burger Classic- a popular burger layered with melted cheese and tender bacon strips. Add a large batch of hot, sizzling French fries, and you have a combo meal worth billions of dollars to the American public. Indeed many of us love fast food!
But what has our country gained from its huge appetite for greasy foods? I can think of three problems-three problems that have stood coldly on America’s doorstep. These problems have destroyed the lives of millions of Americans over the past decade. They are: 1) Obesity 2) High Blood Pressure and 3) Heart Disease. Strangely enough, American consumers will continue to satisfy their appetites for greasy chicken dinners, colossal burgers, salty French fries, and dozens of other fast foods. But the biggest threat is that these three health problems, if left unchecked, will bring more pain, more suffering, and higher death rates to the American population.
No commentsColloidal Silver might just be a wonderful thing and here’s why: Prokaryotic, a.k.a bacterial cells and viruses cannot live in it’s presence. That means that whether you have a cold caused by a virus or a bacterial infection, colloidal silver could be used to fight the infection.
Think about it, if anything is caused by bacteria or viruses, it could certainly be influenced by the use of colloidal silver. It can also act as a topical treatment to prevent cuts or burns from becoming infected.
Colloidal silver will deactivate a prokaryotic pathogen’s ability to use oxygen, thereby suffocating the pathogen to death. Germs are not able to mutate to beat silver - at least not so far. So the super strains of bacteria that have shown up in recent times are not able to defeat silver.
Colloidal Silver is somewhat controversial. It seems to be generally agreed that Colloidal Silver is an effective topical antibacterial agent. Long term internal use may have side affects, such as turning the skin blue. There is also the question of heavy metal toxicity.
No commentsWe possess an incredible power. It’s the power of mind to heal or attract that which we focus our attention on.
You have most likely seen it at work in many people. You probably know those (or perhaps you are even one) who constantly talk about their aches, pains and illnesses. They seem to always be sick.
Sometimes we may wonder if they are making it up just to get attention. But they are not making it up. They do feel that they are sick. The aches and pains are very real to them, even if tests done by their doctor show no problems. Eventually they do get worse and become very sick because that is what they are focusing on and bringing into their life experience.
It can happen rather quickly once we put our attention on the negative. For example, have you noticed all the advertising in the media concerning symptoms for various diseases? When you hear those, your mind will start checking out your body. Natural aches and pains will make you start to worry and wonder if you have the disease. You may even start to feel sick!
No commentsIn order to identify hunger, you must first understand what it is. This is not as easy as it seems. Many of you may never have let yourself experience true hunger, only a feeling of discomfort. Not knowing exactly what it was, you may have been eating past hunger for such a long time you can no longer differentiate between hunger and the feeling of anxiety, stress, boredom, or any number of other emotional or circumstantial stimuli. You haven’t allowed yourself to go without eating for a long enough period of time to have felt true hunger; you may not have experienced it since childhood.
Each of us is born with an innate sense of hunger. When you were a baby and felt this sensation, you cried. Your mother or caregiver pacified you with a bottle or breast, and when you were no longer hungry, you pushed the food away. Before you could speak, you made yourself understood.
No commentsSuccess is what you are prepared to make of yourself every single day. That one cold morning when you want to roll over but instead get up and go to workout, is a defining moment. Success boosts self-confidence and is self perpetuating. We all know it, thrive on it and love it.
Failure on the other hand is perceived as a stressful, negative experience. It means challenge, difficulties, not knowing or worst of all defeat. It affects our self-esteem negatively, builds upon itself and could become a pattern. It could mean a threat to our survival. So we have an aversion to it. We dislike failure.
Well, did you know that failure like stress is actually good for you? Out of the trial and error, the grueling and rigorous demands of trying and failing we humans learned what worked to survive.
Failure is something we as humans need to encounter for new growth and creative changes - uprisings. Failure causes us to reassess, reevaluate, and start again. Out of necessity we learn to take risks, and think “outside the box”. Failure is the fertile soil from which seeds burst and blossom. Failure challenges our will to survive.
No commentsHas this ever happened to you, out of the blue, for apparently no reason at all? You suddenly start experiencing any or all of the following symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain or discomfort such as tightness, lightheaded, dizziness, faint, palpitations, a pounding heart, sweating, trembling or shaking, a choking sensation, nausea or stomach cramps, numbness or a tingling sensation, chills or hot flashes.
Then you experience a fear of losing control or going crazy and even a fear of dying.
If you suffer from anxiety, then you already know that you are having an attack. If you are experiencing most of the symptoms above and do not know what is happening to you, there’s a good chance that it is an anxiety/panic attack.
The first thing you should do is to have your doctor check you out. Do not be afraid to have it checked if you think it’s anxiety. At one time, people would feel embarrassed when they found out that it was “all in their head”. But it’s not all in your head. Anxiety and panic attacks are real and you’d be surprised to learn how many people suffer from this condition. Sadly, many suffer quietly at home, too afraid to venture beyond their safe place.
No commentsThere are as many reasons you’ve given yourself to eat as there are minutes in a day. Storm clouds do it for me. They trigger a memory from when I lived in Florida and went deep-sea fishing in Key West. When a squall was imminent, we’d pull our boat into a nearby atoll and wait out the storm while eating fresh fish sandwiches and drinking cold beer. Sandwiches are finger foods, which I now steer clear of, and I don’t drink beer anymore, but the smell of a rainstorm can be a powerful pitfall for me. I don’t act on it, but the memory is a tantalizing trigger, nevertheless.
A splash of red wine on white pants may not trigger an overeating episode nor will the car not starting, a flat tire, and your cell phone losing a signal at 4:58 p.m. when you must reach someone before 5:00 p.m. But these things have a cumulative effect, and all the mini-annoyances have the potential of becoming maxi-eating responses by the end of the day.
You might stumble because you saw your favorite dessert on a restaurant menu. Or a celebration may convert a tentative no to an emphatic yes as soon as you hear a champagne cork pop from a bottle.
