Cruisin to Lose

Recently, I won a family cruise on the Regis and Kelly talk show. For a person whose business is fitness that is a good news, bad news dilemma. Statistically, an average of 5 lbs. per person is gained on a cruise. The camera adds about 10 lbs.

I set out to see if it was possible to have a great time, enjoy the food and not gain the obligatory 5 lbs. ( My other alternative was to hide behind a potted palm for the duration so as not to be seen by the cameras.)

The following five tips really work:

1. Walk, Walk, Walk
Take a walk around the deck with a loved one or get on the treadmill first thing in the morning before you start your day. When you stop at port walk if it is a short distance instead of taking a cab or shuttle.

2. Use the Stairs
My cabin was located on deck 7. Everything of interest was either two decks down or four to five decks up. I rarely took the elevator.

The Truth about Spot Reduction

At any point, we can pick up the latest fitness magazine or see a television ad for the newest "abdominal reducer" exercise. These gimmicks are feeding on society’s obsession with a "six pack" and everyone is searching for the answer to lose those love handles.

How many times have you heard these statements? "I do a hundred abdominal crunches a night". "I have this one trouble area that I need to work." "I just want to do exercises to lose my hips." These are common requests of many fitness clients. But the truth is performing an exercise that moves a portion of the body does not necessarily mean you are burning the fat there. Hundreds of abdominal crunches or leg lifts a night will not rid the fat in those specific areas.

Here are the top five things about spot reduction that they do not mention in fitness and health magazines.

1. Muscle and fat are two distinct tissues. They have different properties and characteristics. It is not physiologically possible for one to be transformed into another. When performing these exercises, it is our skeletal muscle that is working, not the fat that may surround it.

Nutrition - Its Whats Eating You That Counts

Before we talk about food, the most important nutrients we put in our bodies are air and water. Forget about air if you live in Los Angeles, or now Kona, it’s bad there. Also pure tap water is now next to impossible to find in most cities. Even in beautiful Hawaii most people drink purified or filtered water. Our bodies being a high percent of water (about 75%) it becomes imperative to not drink polluted or chlorinated water. By adding chlorine in water we are attempting to purify it, maybe from some bacteria, but we don’t take out any of the toxic chemicals that end up in our water source. Besides, chlorine has been linked with heart disease and who knows how long term use may affect our health. Boiling water only kills some bacteria, it makes more sense to get a good water filter, because much of the bottled water is questionable. Well there is smart water, there are new water products in the market with treated water, usually it has been ionized, or chemically altered, the best one I know is Angel FIre water, from New Mexico, Hi guys.
